– My first practice week in January, 2013 –

The first practice week started Monday morning and one of our whole group (Ann Lorraine) started to teach 6b something about fairy tales. We divided our practice group in two pairs because we are always four in the same class. So one or two of us are teaching and the rest goes around and helps the children with different tasks.

It was a little bit funny at the beginning for the children and for us because they did not really know us and they were quite shy.

In the third grade they just started the new topic “pets” and the girls and boys were really interested. The teacher sang a song with them and read a book, about animals, out loud.

Tuesday 6b listened to a teacher who told them things about “digital mobning”, so that no one of us had to teach in that lesson.

The other class,6a, started that day with a new topic “Australia”. Ena and Davis were the teachers and asked them things about Australia. The class was also shy at the beginning but later on, more and more children put their hands up to answer different questions. They were also really interested and worked very well with the new topic.

They listened to what the adults said and asked us for help, which was a very good sign.

At the third day, Wednesday, 3a had a music lesson together with some kids from a special class. Everyone was practicing for the “skolefest” which is in a few weeks. They sang different songs and played their instruments. There are a lot of children in this class so it was a little bit loud sometimes.

After the music lesson they had an English lesson and they got a crossword to fill in. They had to know the names of different animals. We walked around and helped them because it wasn´t that easy sometimes for them. Later on they had to walk around in the class and ask the other children if they have any pet at home.

Thursday 6a had the lesson to prepare their power point presentation about different parts of Australia. They worked very well on their own but also asked us for some help sometimes. That was actually really interesting for me and I liked the ideas the children had.

The last day of our first week, Friday, started with the power point presentations from 6a and everyone had a lot of fun with them.

The third grade was still practicing their different songs and instruments for the “skolefest”.

The first week was over so fast because a lot of different and new things happened every day. Also if you have to teach yourself, time goes by so fast. It is challenging to teach on your own first of all but you get used to very fast. All in all it was a great first week at the St. Severin school in Haderslev. I am looking forward, to teach more the next weeks.
